Part 3: Conducting Bilingual Evaluations Using Dynamic Assessments: A Case Study (Middle School Child)

In the first part, of the Dynamic Assessment (DA) Series, we created a foundational understanding of what DA, learned about its benefits of DA, learned the importance of educating your SPED team on DA, and saw it in action with a fast mapping word learning task. In the second part, we walked through the referral process to the assessment report for an actual 4 ½ year old bilingual (Spanish/English) child. 

In this third and last part of the series, we will walk through the referral process all the way to the assessment report for an actual middle school student. We will discuss the materials and assessments that were used, focusing on non-standardized and dynamic assessments tasks to determine if the child has a language disorder, difference, loss, an academic/language gap or a combination of all of these.

  • Briefly review DA (if you want an in depth overview of DA please consider purchasing part 1 of this series)

  • Discuss what to include in an Assessment Plan (AP) when incorporating non-standardized and dynamic assessment methods

  • Review student’s demographic, language background/use, and case history information 

  • Review assessment resources/protocols and descriptive information from various non-standardized assessment procedures (e.g., teacher interview/academic skills, receptive/expressive language skills, dynamic assessment tasks, etc.)

  • Discuss eligibility determination
