Part 6: How to Use Narrative Dynamic Assessments to Reduce Bias in Your Assessments

Are you wanting to gather more information than just  if a child knows a narrative concept or not from a standardized assessment? What if they weren’t exposed to how to tell stories? What if you are picking up more on standardized assessment biases than an actual language disorder?

Well, implementing a narrative dynamic assessment task can help you reduce bias by giving you more information on if there is a language disorder, difference, language loss, language/academic gap or a combination of all of these.

In addition, narrative dynamic assessments can help you understand how they learn, how quickly they learn, what supports are beneficial, and support you in goal creation.

In Parts 1 through 3 of the Dynamic Assessment webinar series, we got an in-depth understanding of dynamic assessment and discussed how to use non-standardized and dynamic assessment approaches with a preschool and a middle school student.

In Parts 4 through 6, we are diving deeper into some of the non-standardized and dynamic assessment approaches we had discussed earlier in the series: Nonword Repetition Tasks, Fast-Mapping Word-Learning Tasks, and Narrative Dynamic Assessments.

In Part 6, we will not only be discussing what a narrative dynamic assessment is, what research has to say about it, different types of narrative dynamic assessments, but also how including a narrative assessment can help reduce bias from showing up in your assessment and potentially labeling a child with a language disorder when it’s just a language difference. We will also be watching a video on how to practically implement a narrative dynamic assessment task (purchase of the webinar also includes a narrative dynamic assessment example write-up!)
