Part 5: How to Use Fast-Mapping Word Learning Tasks Instead of Standardized Vocabulary Test to Reduce Bias in Your Assessments

Have you wondered what standardized vocabulary assessments, like the Expressive/Receptive One-Word or PPVT, actually measure or wondered if the child got the answer wrong to a vocabulary question because they were never exposed to the word? Me too.

What if I told you you can ditch those standardized vocabulary words and replace it with an assessment measure that is much more dynamic and interactive? (Hint: It’s a Fast-Mapping Word Learning Task (FMWLT!).

In Parts 1 through 3 of the Dynamic Assessment webinar series, we got an in-depth understanding of dynamic assessment and discussed how to use non-standardized and dynamic assessment approaches with a preschool and a middle school student.

In Parts 4 through 6, we are diving deeper into some of the non-standardized and dynamic assessment approaches we had discussed earlier in the series: Nonword Repetition Tasks, Fast-Mapping Word-Learning Tasks, and Narrative Dynamic Assessments.

In Part 5, we will not only be discussing what are fast-mapping word learning tasks, what research has to say, discuss different types of FMWLTS, but why standardized vocabulary measures can be more harmful than beneficial and how they are actually not measuring what we think they are measuring (hint: they are measuring socioeconomic status!).
