Are you an SLP that knows that Dynamic Assessment (DA) & non-standardized approaches are beneficial and best practice, but you just don't know how to get started or how to use it?
Hi, I am Veronica. Don't worry, I was there too. I reported and used standardized assessments like my life depended on it. Fortunately, once I took the time to learn about DA and loosening my grip on using standardized scores, I started using it more and more. Eventually, I felt more confident using it and explaining it to others. That’s why I created this Dynamic Assessment Series to help others overcome some of the same challenges and jumpstart their dynamic assessment skills.
A Six-Part Dynamic Assessment Series
-
How to Get Started with Dynamic Assessments: A Practical Approach
Dynamic Assessment Series Part 1 of 6
In this first part of the Dynamic Assessment Series, you will not only get an in-depth intro to DA, but you will also learn practical ways on how to start implementing DA in your next assessment (with an example of a DA task write-up!).
We will also be discussing how you can use this information for not only yourself, but feel empowered with knowledge & research to explain this to others (e.g., SPED directors, other SLPs, School Psychologists, SPED teachers, parents/caregivers, etc.).
-
Conducting Bilingual Evaluations Using Dynamic Assessments: A Case Study (Preschool Child)
Dynamic Assessment Series Part 2 of 6
In this second part of the Dynamic Assessment Series, we will walk through the initial referral to the written evaluation process of an actual 4 ½ year old bilingual (Spanish/English) child.
We will discuss the materials and dynamic & non-standardized assessments that were used to determine if the child has a language disorder, difference, loss, an academic gap or a combination of all of these.
-
Conducting Bilingual Evaluations Using Dynamic Assessments: A Case Study (Middle School Child)
Dynamic Assessment Series Part 3 of 6
In this last part of the Dynamic Assessment series, we will walk through the initial referral to the written evaluation process for an actual 12 year old bilingual (Spanish/English) middle school child.
We will discuss the non-standardized and dynamic assessments tasks used to determine if the child has a language disorder, difference, loss, an academic gap or a combination of all of these.
-
How to Use Nonword Repetition Tasks to Reduce Bias in Your Assessments
Dynamic Assessment Series Part 4 of 6
In this webinar, we will not only be discussing what NWRTs are and how they can help with reducing bias in your assessment, what research say about it, who to use it with, but also discuss different types of NWRTs, learn how to discuss findings in a parent/caregiver meeting (e.g., IEP meeting) and learn how to practically implement a NWRT by watching a couple of videos of NWRTs in action.
-
How to Use Fast- Mapping Word Learning Tasks Instead of Standardized Vocabulary Test To Reduce Bias in Your Assessments
Dynamic Assessment Series Part 5 of 6
In this webinar, we will not only be discussing what are fast-mapping word learning tasks, what research has to say, discuss different types of FMWLTS, but why standardized vocabulary measures can be more harmful than beneficial and how they are actually not measuring what we think they are measuring (hint: they are measuring socioeconomic status!). We will also be watching a video on how to practically implement a FMWLT.
-
How to Use Narrative Dynamic Assessments to Reduce Bias in Your Assessments
Dynamic Assessment Series Part 6 of 6
In this webinar, we will not only be discussing what a narrative dynamic assessment is, what research has to say about it, different types of narrative dynamic assessments, but how including a narrative assessment can help reduce bias from showing up in your assessment and potentially labeling a child with a language disorder when it’s just a language difference. We will also be watching a video on how to practically implement a narrative dynamic assessment task.
